CH.1

"Huff huff huff huff" was an uncommon sound.
It's been so long since Apollo felt out of breath. It was a routine check Zeus had commanded him to carry out in Tartarus. This started ever since the underworld and the soul forge was given to Anubis as part of the peace agreement from the elder gods. Zeus didn't like a responsibility so important to be out of his control. Rarely he gives the order but once every millennia he gets curious. This was the worst of times. He needed to get back to Olympus to warn them of what he saw but first he had to make it out alive. The task was given to Apollo because his unique speed and powers of long distance travel, though it wasn't helping now. Whatever was chasing him wasn't too far behind which is why he took to the labyrinth. The halls were narrow with many twists and turns that could even get a god lost if he wasn't careful but Apollo just needed a few minutes. If he could get enough space between himself and his pursuer he could generate enough power to teleport straight to Olympus. Left, left, right, left, straight. Keeping his speed low enough so he doesn't create a sonic boom and give his location away, not that he hasn't done it already but whoever was chasing him was catching up with ease. This was different and scary for him. He prided himself for his speed and gained renown for being the fastest god but at this moment he was losing faith in his own abilities. Left, left, right, right, left, just a few more twists and turns and he'll be ready. The distance he needs to teleport was far so he needed every bit of energy from the souls he had in him. He has more but he never had to absorb so much since the last war and right now he wished he had every spare soul in his reserve within him right now. "This can't be happening" he thought. Even in the wars he had his family and comrades there with him to look out for each other. He's never truly been alone. Athena always looked out for him, as a big sister should, but he often was ashamed that he was inferior to her. Zeus has expressed that he should pride himself being his son and should not show weakness. It was further shown during the war when Zeus would give him credit for winning battles that would not have been possible without Athena. He would take the credit from fear of his father and not to hurt his pride. He always thought of what other gods would think if him if they knew Athena was in every way a better god than he. None of that mattered to him now. He was tearing a bit. He felt truly alone and the only thing he wanted was his big sister to help him. His fear was consuming him. He even thought about death, which hasn't been a thought he had in ages but it was sinking in now. He thought about doing what some righteous gods have done and offer their soul to the forge. He only pondered on that option once in his immense lifetime but quickly discarded it, for Appolo loved life and all it's wonders. He would gladly do it now to save him from the horror that was chasing him. It was coming to kill him and there was nothing he could do about it. At one point in the chase he reared around and gave his assailant a powerful solar blast and when it hit its marked the blast dissolved into nothingness without bothering or slowing it down. That was the moment he realized escape was the only option. Right, right, right, left, right, he looks back, left, right, left, right, he sees a long corridor. He takes down the lengthy corridor whilst looking behind him and notices that, with the ground covered, his pursuer was at its furthest behind. "This is it" he thought. He took a few more turns until he found a four way. Stopped in the center he took his chance. Immediately he starts charging his power for the teleport while taking turns looking down every hall for his pursuer. Arcane runes start forming under him and orbs of energy start rising up from them. The light intensifies as more runes form and gives off more light. The four way corridor is now fully lit in the light of the energy. "Almost there..." he thought and he makes a sigh of relief and smiles. The light is almost consuming him and when it does the teleport will be ready and he couldn't be more happy. CRACK. The sonic boom erases all signs of hope, happiness, and optimism from the god. The look on Apollos face instantly turns to dread. "C'mon!!!" he cries. A shadow appears from the long corridor in front of him. He observes the runes and sees that its moments away from ready but sadly his assailant takes note of this too. CRACK. Another sonic boom is given off as his pursuer flies down the corridor toward Appolo at an alarming rate. The light finally consumes him and he initiates the teleport as his pursuer is almost upon him. "AAAAAHHH!!!" he screams as it flies toward him and gets within inches before the teleport succeeds and he finally arrives in Olympus.

"Olympus is flourishing my lord and Pandora will be arriving with Kaneis for your tribute of souls." Hermes states. Zeus continues to look over the edge for a moment before nodding in Hermes direction to confirm.
"The Aesir have requested more support from Olympus to assist in either the search and elimination of the escapees from Tartarus or a detachment be formed to seek out the breach from the underworld. This is a request from Odin himself." Hermes pauses again for confirmation but instead Zeus finally speaks.
"The All Father and his son has sent countless fodder to seek out the breach and never has a single warrior returned with so much as a report. The famed Berserkers were all but wiped out in the quest. I will not send troops to attempt to clean up his failures. Our army will continue to seek out the beasts in our sector and destroy them immediately. If the Aesir cannot maintain their strength that is not my problem. In fact, that is a sign of weakness and if we must intervene for them, I expect a percentage of their shares from the forge be redirected to Olympus." Hermes shows a sign of concern.
"Is that the reply I am to send to Odin?" he asks.
"Did I give another?" Zeus replies. Hermes immediately starts to bring up the next issue but is interrupted.
"Kaneis has arrived with the soul warden my lord." a servant states with her head down waiting for a reply.
"We will receive them in the council chamber with the rest of the lords of Olympus." Zeus tells her. The servant speedily walks out of the room to give the orders to the others to prepare the council chamber and the guests for the meeting. Zeus is firm and strict in tradition and order in Olympus. No matter the title or status of a visiting god, they were to not only address the mannerisms and laws of Olympus but they are to dress the part which is why most talks between nations are through messages. No god will submit their traditions and status unless they absolutely had to meet in Olympus. Which no major god has done in ages besides Kaneis and Pandora for their routine deliveries. All other nations greet them as equals and have them treated as special guests. They even allow them to stay a few days and make an event out of it. Not Zeus. He has them present the souls as tribute and sit in during the counsel on the expenditure of the souls and the expectance of the next delivery. All useless since the pair have no say in how much souls they get or how they use it. Later, a servant entered the guest lobby and addressed the pair.
"Zeus and the council are ready to receive you my lords." she stated then left the room. Kaneis and Pandora then stood up.
"After centuries of doing this shameful duty, this is still my least favorite place of delivery." Pandora said with a blank expression. She had tan skin with brown hair that she normally left unstyled in any way. She was millions of years old but looked so young and innocent for an ex soul warden.
"I don't share your lengthy years or your tragedy Pandora but you have said this every century for this delivery since I was appointed to this detail." Kaneis replies.
"Your point?"
"I figured with your life span and those who share it, a visit to Olympus and it's traditions would no longer be so........bothersome." he finished.
"You are a young god still boy, but if there is one thing a god near my life span can agree on is that an asshole like Zeus can always damper your mood. So imagine knowing that you have to suffer it every century." She said finally looking at him.
"I may not have known him as long but the century I am required to be stationed here is the most stressful." he said.
"So you get the idea. Soon you will reach a point when you realize that you will have to suffer this for eternity. Then you will forever be scarred because you will realize that our duty that we are carrying out as of this moment is what's keeping him alive and is consequently keeping his torment in our lives." She said with a smile.
"Shit, I think it just hit me now."
"Good, now lets get this over with and repeat the process for the next million years. Assuming the world doesn't die on us." she said then proceeded to leave. Kaneis grinned. He had the feeling the she might be rooting for the worlds end. She wasn't wrong. The both of them were chained to this job for eternity and he doesn't feel it now but he wondered how many years it will take until he starts to have the same doom and gloom attitude she does. The walk down the corridor was long as they followed behind the servant. They both knew the way but Zeus was strict on ceremony. Olympus was close to how they depicted it in movies or art. It was built with rare white stone with open halls and pillars. Zeus liked the openness and the sight of blue skies and starry nights. People thought it to be poetic but they were being kind. Kaneis heard it from most gods who didn't fear him. It was arrogance they would say. The Olympus was atop the tallest mountain in existence but the city itself was all that was visible above the clouds. It has been cloaked from sight and is only seen if you pass the vale. Governments are ruled by the gods so they know to steer clear from certain landmarks and also had them declare such areas to be military airspace to keep random planes from flying too close. The governments were useful in ensuring that other mortals don't discover such locations. This was the very mountain that Zeus threw thunderbolts down from to defeat the titans that attacked it. He won that battle so he felt untouchable in his open palace. He wasn't wrong. If ever a force dared to attack Olympus the remaining gods and demigods would meet them before they got to the mountain but if some did get through they would not even the bolts that would take their lives. They can see the council chamber now and the guards at the door kneel as they walk past them. When they enter the servant takes to the center as Pandora and Kaneis stay at the entrance. She kneels.
"Pandora of Athens and her escort are here to present tribute to the lords of Olympus." she states. Many god s had titles but Kaneis was not like them so he was announces with no title. To the gods and the world he was nobody. Born and trained to be a servant to the world.
"Leave and seal the chamber. The guests may come forward and present the offerings" Hermes announces. The servant walks past them head down as they step on to the center podium. The doors shut behind them with an echo that Kaneis grew accustom to be the sound that started the proceedings. The chamber was circular with pillars stationed on the outer edges. Between each pillar, a few feet closer to the center, there were 12 chairs. In each were the most powerful gods in Olympus with Zeus and Hera at the center. All the chairs were filled but the ones that once seated Athena, Ares, and Apollo. Ares fell in the 2nd war of the gods, Athena left Olympus shortly after that same war, and Apollos absence was unknown. Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes, and Dionysus were all that were present. Pandora knelt with her eyes to the ground.
"Lord Zeus, with the predetermined number given to you by the soul master, Lord Anubis, here is the tribute awarded to Olympus." she said this every time never changing a word. Kaneis stepped forward with a chest and set it in front of her. Pandora's box they called it, though the stories said there were horrors and pure evil in it, the reality of it was that it held the power and life source to the gods. Pandora opened the chest.
"I am ready Lord Zeus." she said as she raised her hands palms up and closed her eyes. Zeus stood up and stepped out from under the shade, his white hair shining bright in the sun. The image of Zeus was that of a bearded old man with white hair to the mortals. The hair was the only description they got right. He had the look of  man in his 20's and was physically fit in every way. Gods don't age unless they start reaching the end of their life force. Every god is alive today because souls they are given from the forge every century.
"Ten million souls will be given to each god present here." Zeus commands. Pandora opens her eyes and they are glowing bright yellow. She uses her powers as a soul warden to weave the amount of souls needed. Each god in the room was now standing, ready to receive their share. After a few seconds Pandora now held a large ball of light and then it slowly started to make individual streams to each god. Each one of them were glowing during the process until the light in her hands dissolved into nothing marking the end of the exchange. Hermes stepped forward.
"Now that the we have replenished our shares from the forge we will now start the division of the rest of the souls and decide it's expenditure until the next tribute." he stated. As the discussion started Kaneis and Pandora looked at each other briefly. The look was a signal to each other that this was a waste of time for them both. They wished they could do something else while the Olympians  had their discussion that usually went on for hours until the decisions were made and the rest of the souls were expended. But something happened that has never happened even in Pandora's lifetime. Runes of light started to form in front of Pandora. Kaneis secured the chest and Pandora quickly moved back waiting for the obvious teleport to finish.
"Ah, it seems Apollo has decided to finally join us. Perhaps here to get his share and possibly leave immediately after." he said sarcastically. Zeus was not amused and had an enraged look on his face. He was all about order and traditions and one of his sons was currently insulting that. The runes were now rising in speed and number as Apollo's sillouette of light started to form. Hermes noticed the teleport completing and continued his banter.
"Lord Apollo, you insult this meeting and your father with your lateness and to make matters worse, you arrive in the middle of this chamber in a fashion that...."
"Silence!" Zeus shouted. In a second the Olympian gods had looks of shock upon them. Kaneis finally saw it too as he stepped to the side to get a better view of Apollo. The sun god was clutching his neck where a blade now rested. It was lodge in as if someone tried to behead him.
"Aphrodite, heal him quickly!" shouted Posiedon. The goddess rushed towards him and in that moment the blade ran the rest of its way through Apollos neck completely beheading him then darted east. It was enchanted like Mjolnir so it was returning to its owner.
"Hermes, after it!" Poseidon shouted again then Hermes took off letting off a sonic boom in the distance. Kaneis noticed Poseidon was giving orders when Zeus should be and then he saw why. The sky was darkening and thunder rumbled as Zeus started walking toward his son. As he got closer the other gods stepped back except for Poseidon.
"We need to leave now Kaneis!" Pandora shouted to him.
"They might need us -"
"No. Take it from someone who has truly witnessed Zeus's wrath, this is better left to the other Olympians!" she finished and grabbed him by the arm and pulled him out of the chamber with her. They rushed away from the chamber down the hall. The thunder was louder and the sky was no longer clear and blue. It was now filled with dark clouds and lightning. Kaneis looked back through the doors. He was far but could still see and hear Poseidon pleading to Zeus.
"Brother, please-"
"MY BOY!!!" Zeus screamed and at the same moment a lightning bolt came from the sky connecting to the him creating a shock wave that sent the pillars and anything else not secure, or a god, flying off the edge of the chambers. Kaneis and Pandora finally made it to the main capitol. Kaneis was in disarray and pacing until he noticed Pandora standing in place staring at him as if what just happened was normal and he was being over dramatic. He regained his composure and stood right in front of her locking eyes.
"I may have missed something you didn't but I really need to know. What the hell just happened in there?!" he asked finally.
She smiled as if he should already know then looked back down the long hall leading to the council chamber.
"Judging by the events that just occurred and Zeus's reaction it a simple conclusion really." she says as she looks back at him.
"War."
